Foundation's seek creative, scalable proposals for generating awareness of economic mobility

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Raikes Foundation, has announced a new initiative to generate awareness and broaden the conversation around issues that inhibit economic mobility and contribute to poverty by elevating voices from diverse backgrounds.

This new initiative is rooted in the Gates Foundation's recent focus on addressing the barriers to economic mobility, particularly the myths and misconceptions that contribute to entrenching poverty.

The Foundations are seeking creative, scalable proposals for generating awareness of economic mobility (particularly through an intersectional lens that considers race, gender, ethnicity, religion, geography and more) and communicates stories of poverty in a way that challenges its misconceptions. Ten grants of up to $100,000 are expected to be announced in spring 2020.

As expert local storytellers, public broadcasters may be well-positioned to communicate these stories with impact. For example, Grant Center member station WHYY (Philadelphia, PA) is part of Broke in Philly, a collaborative reporting initiative focused on poverty and economic justice in Philadelphia. Additionally, KERA (Dallas, TX) has undertaken a successful initiative called One Crisis Away that helps put a face on poverty by exploring the stories of individuals living on the financial edge.
