Please review the important changes noted in the draft PAPPG, and expected to be enforced starting in January.
Intellectual Merit in Narrative
NSF has removed the requirement for the Project Description to contain, as a separate section within the narrative, a section labeled "Intellectual Merit". The Project Description should still provide a clear statement of the work to be undertaken and must include the objectives for the period of the proposed work and expected significance; the relationship of this work to the present state of knowledge in the field, as well as to work in progress by the PI under other support.
The NSF is designating SciENcv (Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae) as an NSF-approved template and is encouraging faculty to use SciENcv to prepare a biographical sketch for inclusion in an NSF proposal. NSF will continue to accept biographical sketches not prepared through use of SciENcv until implementation of the next iteration of the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG). Additionally, NSF will be enforcing current policy on listing Synergistic Activities, prohibiting examples with multiple components.
Current and Pending Support Update
The 2020 PAPPG will contain new proposed revisions to improve clarity in the Current and Pending Support section. NSF does not consider these clarifications to be changes in policy. Applicants should anticipate implementation of an electronic format for submission of information.
